Dojo Icon.......

The First in a Series

Text Box: Raeanne competing in the 2004 USKA World Championships
Some people call them dojo icons, other people call them dojo rats; they are the Martial Arts Students that do not feel complete with themselves unless they have been to the Dojo for a good old fashion work out.  This months Dojo Icon is Raeann Boynton.  Raeann has been a Mandeville Karate Training Center student for 3 years; she began at the young age of 5 and is currently a 3rd class brown belt.  Raeann has always been one of those “eye catching students,” you are likely to see her working out or helping in any class during the week; she attends a variety of them (even ADULT CLASSES!!!)  Both she and her aunt have been competing in tournaments for some time now and are well known through out the USKA as spirited competitors. More importantly, their working out together, serves as bonding experience between the two of them.  Recently Raeann had surgery on her stomach and is in recuperation, but she plans on making her return to Karate as soon as possible.  Since she is in her recuperation stage right now, I decided to catch Raeann while she was lying around (a rare thing for her) and ask her a few questions:

Q: How are you feeling?

A: Good, a little pain.

Q: Why did you decide to start Karate?

A: I decided to start karate after I saw a Jackie Chan Movie; I think it was Twin Fists.

Q: What is your favorite Class to make?

A: Open Gym, because I get to push myself, to learn something new every time I go.

Q:  What is your goal in Karate?

A: Right now, ummm I would like to make my black belt and then be an instructor one day.

Q:  What is your Favorite Drill/Exercise?

A: Jump squats

Q:  What is your Least Favorite Drill/ Exercise?

A: Push ups, yeah right now with my stomach pains push ups are really hard for me.

Q: What is your Favorite Tournament to go to?

A: Louisiana State Championships (This year she places 1st sparring, 4th weapons, 3rd forms)

Q: How is it working out with your Aunt Julie?

A: It’s really cool because I get extra workouts and that gets me closer to my goal.

Q: How soon before you expect to come back?

A: Sometime before Halloween

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Strawberries

Q: What is your Favorite Color?

A: Red

Q: What is your Favorite Movie?

A: Run Down

Q: What is your Favorite Song?

A: “This time around” By Hanson
